Tall Timbers
Want to witness the original forests of Penns Creek? Back before the state was clear cut for lumber in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Then hike Tall Timbers from Snyder Middleswarth State Park, about six miles from the cabin. It’s home to one of the last strands of old-growth trees in Pennsylvania. The hike’s mossy path harkens images of ancient forests, very Jurassic Park-like. The old-growth hemlocks reach 100 or more feet into the air, piercing the canopy of oaks and white pines, making it difficult to sight their tops. The hike includes a good steep climb. The footprint of a once-standing fire tower marks the top. Continue on across the top of the mountain and you can spy the fuselage of a long-ago plane crash. We’ve seen the scaley, paper-thin skin a few times on outings.
