Amish Markets
The Amish hold great fascination to anyone who ever imagined living a simple life off the land. Once concentrated in Lancaster, PA, the Amish started migrating to other rural parts of Pennsylvania during the 1970s when land in Lancaster became scarce and their lifestyle was commercialized.
Now, they live and work among us here along Penns Creek. A pleasant, quiet people who stay to themselves, unless you engage them in trade, the Amish, along with the Mennonite cousins, operate many of the roadside vegetable stands along the back roads of the area.
To spot the Amish in their natural setting, just drive around on a Saturday evening, as their buggies ride the valley roads on the way to church at private homes. Get stuck behind a buggy and you’re sure to win a wave from an onboard child. Be respectful. The Amish don’t want to be photographed or otherwise bothered.
