Parks
Two nearby state parks are within easy driving distance of Oakwood on Penns Creek. Both were built in the 1930s as part of the CCC--a federal program that put Americans back to work during the Depression by having them build parks and infrastructure throughout rural America. Both offer campy, small sandy beaches that recreate a sense of timelessness among the laurel, oak and pine trees of the area.
Raymond B. Winter State Park Halfway Dam offers a similar experience with a nice hiking trail to a lookout.
Poe Paddy, click here for driving directions, is a quaint, timeless place that offers easy hiking trails, a small sandy beach and snack bar to visitors.
Other Spots
While a bit of a drive (about an hour from Oakwood on Penns Creek) Knoebels is hands-down the nation’s top vintage amusement park. Hailed as America’s largest FREE amusement park, Knoebles charges no parking or attendance and requires only that you pay by the ride.
A remnant of times long ago when families took day trips to roadside attractions, Woodward Cave claims to be one of the largest caverns in Pennsylvania so much so that it has yet to be completely explored and excavated.
What is the headwaters of Penns Creek? Some claim the big river begins some 40 miles west at a spring that once eroded away a massive cavern now known as Penns Cave.
Woodward Camp is a world-renown gymnastics, skateboarding, bmx and cheerleading camp just 14 miles from Oakwood on Penns Creek.
