Meet Your Hosts
The Matuskys are a family of creative adventurers and entrepreneurs who more than anything love to get things done
Whether it’s starting businesses or traveling the world, the Matusky family work together to realize each other’s dreams. Their history on Penns Creek dates to 1963 when Judy Matusky’s parents, Bud and Babe Rodkey, bought a small rustic cabin just a stone throw downstream on the north side of Penns Creek. Bud, an avid outdoorsman, gave his children the greatest gift of all, a deep love and respect for nature. After Judy Rodkey married Greg Matusky the couple determined to buy their own cabin on Penns Creek. Their search led them to a cabin directly across from their parent’s cabin.
The deal was done in 1998. A fallen white pine took down that cabin in 1999 and Greg and Judy vowed to replace it with a cabin of their dreams, built from reclaimed Amish barn wood, with secret passageways and a spiral staircase accented with a banister made from a local a wild grapevine harvested on property. They named it Pinewood on Penns Creek and spend most holidays and summers there between traveling and starting businesses. In 2008, they doubled the size of Pinewood on Penns Creek by building a second-floor bunkhouse from reclaimed wood and vintage tin roofs to emulate an antique 1930s fishing cabin. Pinewood now sleeps 24 in two private bedrooms and three lofts with hideaway beds that slip into the walls.
In summer 2020, the family bought the next-door cabin–Oakwood on Penns Creek–to realize a new dream of sharing the Penns Creek experience with families and fisherpeople looking for an authentic Pennsylvania adventure. As always the entire family took part. Son Jono created this site and began the marketing. Daughter Megan and son-in-law Kevin Martin masterminded the negotiations and purchase. Youngest daughter Jessica did the interior design. Greg had a hand in the demolition and Judy helped with the financing.
Which brings us to Oakwood on Penns Creek, the culmination of nearly sixty years of Penns Creek living. We’ve outfitted the cabin with a new kitchen and bathroom and retained two private bedrooms with a second-floor bunkhouse perfect for children or guests. We fully outfitted the cabin with all supplies and accessories needed to make your stay complete. Kayaks and inner tubes are stashed underneath. You can even rent the cabin’s pedal-assist electric bikes to ride high into the mountains without taxing legs or lungs. Need lures or flies? You can buy them from our supply closet. We have tried to think of everything.
