Flyfishing on Penns Creek

For beginner fly fisherman, Penns Creek offers the rare opportunity to learn and practice casting without fear of tangling. The wide-open waters make it easy to wade away from shore and cast without hanging up on underbrush.

For gear and flies, Penns Creek Angler is a nearby Orvis registered dealer that can outfit you with rod, waders, reel, line, leaders and flies. They post regular stream updates on their Facebook page. And offer a hatch report for each month of the year on its website.

It’s a great old-time fly shop located in the former Weikert General Store. Bruce Fisher, the owner, is akin to a stream whisper who can give you tips on what’s hitting where and what flies to buy.

For casting lessons or guided tours, The Feathered Hook is an awesome fly shop and Bed and Breakfast owned by Jonas Price. It’s located in the sleepy town of Coburn, right over the Woodward Mountain from Oakwood on Penns Creek, and about a 14 mile bike ride from Oakwood using the secret biking path. The shop offers an extensive collection of gear and flies so bring your credit card.

You will want to stock up and ask for their sage counsel on nearby sections of Penns Creek that are hard to find but worth the journey. Ask where the tunnel is located to get started. They will fill you in.

Visit Penns Creek close to Memorial Day, and you might just be lucky enough to be here for the famed Green Drake hatch. The hatch happens only once a year, and when it’s on, the stream comes alive with trout percolating up to snatch the finger-long mayflies as they dance upon the water’s surface. It’s magical and literally one of the Northeast’s strongest hatches with fisherpeople from throughout the region chasing the hatch down from Coburn to Milmont.
